an ignorant statement from a "college dropout"

if any of you missed the american red cross telethon last night, take a look at the highlight of the evening. make sure to watch mike myers and chris tucker's reactions to what is being said. and you can tell by the way myers' mic is clipped when they cut to tucker that the director/producer had to cut away from that train wreck as soon as the douchebag stepped miles over the line.

"no i won't cry on the outside, anymore."

Jen,
He may be "ignorant" but what he says is true - it may be wrapped up in emotion but try being black in this country before you open your mouth.

wow hypocrisy. yes, there were definite mistakes made during the administration's relief effort after the hurricane. however, to jump to the conclusion that "george bush hates black people" is a perfect example of what it is like to be white in this country.

for instance, if i were to make a mistake that reflected poorly on the black people in my community, i would be called a racist. if i were to even say something negative about a black person, whether it is true or not, i would be called a racist--and the same thing goes for virtually every white person i've ever met.

now, i will be the first to admit that there are countless numbers of people in this country who are racist and act on those beliefs. however, the number of people who aren't racist greatly outnumber them.

and i can guarantee you that the first thing that went through the president's mind wasn't, "oh, well most of the people stuck in new orleans are poor and black, so let's just hold off for awhile." bullshit. the fact is that no one had any idea of the numbers of people that actually stayed in new orleans. so any relief effort was obviously trumped by the time they figured out the magnitude of the situation.

so, of course, there is no way that i can experience what life is like to be black in this country. but before you open your mouth and call racism, why don't you stop and consider that other circumstances might have led to the deteriorating situation.

Have you considered that a public telethon trying to raise money for those that are currently in a living hell might not be the place to voice one's very insignificant opinions. These people are dying and need help. Use your celebrity, Mr. West, and do some good for them. While I am in no way saying that racism is prevelant in the U.S., it is also a two way street. Racism does not mean treating someone poorly because they are black. It means treating someone differently because of their RACE, be it black, hispanic, or white, yes that's right, white. It can happen, it does happen. So before turning everything into a race issue in this country, consider that things might be the way they are regardless of race.

Yeah, so rather than saying, "While I am in no way saying that racism is prevelant in the U.S., it is also a two way street," I meant to say, "While I am in no way saying that racism is not prevelant in the U.S., it is also a two way street."

That completely changes what I was trying to say.
